I Love My Kids, But My Wife Comes First

My kids hold a very special place in my heart.  Very special.  But no matter how cute, how much they look like me, or how awesome they are, my wife comes first.  Until recently, I thought this was a common mindset.  I have learned some parents put their kids first.

When your spouse is a priority it will show

Although I have always believed my wife should come first, my actions didn’t always show it.  Truth be told, I sometimes struggle.  However, I have recognized it and began to make changes.  One example is in the weekly date night with my wife.

We’ve been married 11 years, but have never consistently had a date night.  That is until recently, when I recognized the need and we both made it a priority.  Up to that point I allowed many things to get it the way.  The reasons excuses sounded good.  But what I was really doing was not making time with my wife a priority.

It was the equivalent of putting my kids first.  I always found a way to make their events.  Sometimes going to extreme measures to do so.

  1. To answer your question….yes my wife comes before my kids. My wife and I put our personal relationship with Christ before each other. Then, we put each other next. Followed by our children, family, friends work and then serving at our church. By making my wife a priority before my kids, I’m actually making my kids the priority. More is caught than is taught. If I want my daughter to have the greatest chance of a happy marriage to a decent, kind, gentle, loving and hard working man….I need to be that in both word and action to my wife. It I want my son to be a great husband…I need to model what that looks like.
